Three WA miners win Chief Executive Women scholarships

Chief Executive Women today announced three West Australians have been awarded executive education scholarships for women leaders.

The scholarships are the final part of CEW’s 2014 scholarships program of 16 awards worth more than $250,000.

The winners are:

Alison Morley, Manager, Project Generation & Geological Services, Iluka Resources Ltd, will be attending INSEAD Leading for Results in Singapore. Morley began her career as a mine geologist working underground at Broken Hill and Mount Isa. During her career in the resources sector she has been variously: a superintendent of mine geology, a consultant, a CEO of an ASX-listed junior explorer, a mentor and is now currently heading up the Project Generation and Resource Development teams at Iluka Resources. She is also Deputy Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Minerals Research Institute of WA (MRIWA), Regional Councillor for Finsia and a board member at WA Youth Theatre Company.

Claire Negus, Director Commercial, Roy Hill will be attending INSEAD’s Leading for Results program in Singapore. Negus was named Risk Manager of the Year (2012) by the Risk Management Institute of Australasia and was a Telstra Business Woman of the Year finalist for 2012. She is responsible for strategy, leadership and management of the Commercial Department for Roy Hill.

Kate Holling, Superintendent Drill & Blast, BHPBilliton, has already taken up her scholarship to attend INSEAD’s Learning to Lead program in Singapore. Holling is responsible for 54 people, of which she is the youngest and only female, and an operating budget of $40m. She is a mentor with the company’s Mines Diversity Working Group.


Christine Christian, CEW President, said: “Helping women to achieve their potential as leaders is the mission of Chief Executive Women and the focus of all our fundraising efforts. Not all women are born leaders, but many leaders are born women. CEW will continue to identify them and support them.”

Diane Smith-Gander, a member of CEW’s governing Council, said: “I am delighted WA women in resources continue to secure the highly sought-after CEW scholarships. This speaks to the potential for emerging diversity in the sector which, while a long time coming, will do a great deal to ensure productivity gains and improve the innovation profile.”

Other awards announced today are:

Wharton School Executive Development Program, (USA): Cecile Wake, Vice-President Commercial at QGC, a subsidiary of BG Group, which is developing the Queensland Curtis LNG gas project.

INSEAD Leading for Results (Singapore): Lori Callahan, General Manager, Allianz Australia Ltd; and Venessa Curnow, Director, National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples (awarded in partnership with the Roberta Sykes Foundation)

INSEAD Learning to Lead (Singapore): Stacey Broadbent, Manager, Aboriginal Housing Office NSW (awarded in partnership with the Roberta Sykes Foundation); Renee Garner, General Manager, Risk, Regulation and Compliance – Retail, Energy Australia; Jessica McCarthy, Head of Investment Relationships, AMP Capital
