WIMWA – Personal Branding Event

WIMWA – Personal Branding Event

WRAYS Brand, Culture and Research services are synonymous with all things brand; who better than Head of that division, Jo Woodfield to deliver a powerful thought-provoking seminar on Personal Branding to over 90 talented WIMWA mining execs and professionals.

Inside 40 minutes we started upon our quest for validity, meaning and most importantly happiness, embarking on a voyage of self-discovery and considering areas where we could have a broader impact and improve.

Personal branding is culmination of what you are or aspire to be, what you are professionally and why it is that you are truly different. Ability to understand your strengths and leverage those to reinforce your personal brand, but at same time ensuring you stay open to feedback, coaching to refine and harness your potential.

The secret here though is authenticity and deep belief and self-confidence in what you do and who you are. It also involves pursuing your goals with loads of energy and enthusiasm and using your sphere of influence, being accountable – i.e. simply doing what you say you will do.

Jo advocates following three principles – Reciprocity, Thinking Abundantly and Giving Without Expecting. Illustrating that networking is so important from both sales and non-sales perspectives, and why joining relevant networking groups (online and offline) such as WIMWA remains so important – there was really no doubt for anyone in attendance that networking and events (including keynotes) remain key leverage areas. Jo highlighted the importance of not making the mistake of thinking it is all about you, or underestimating the real value to networking: what it is all about is making great connections (selling comes later).

So, how do you build your brand? Like any business really – what you put in ultimately leads to what you get out –if you promote yourself, dedicate at least 25 minutes every day to building / engaging with your networks including a strong focus on Linked-In. Attend events, commit to networking group or join a Board or committee; give freely of yourself be it donation of time, services or money and don’t be afraid to ask for introductions or referrals back; it is all about reciprocity remember!

Informal strategic alliances are also useful and growing in popularity as our resources become scarser, founded in both trust, integrity, they are win-win for both parties, producing value for all.
Lastly, attitude and self-confidence is everything! Only wrong you can do is to do nothing at all (one WIMWA professional relayed a great quote on day “if you aren’t evolving then you are dissolving!” Just by loving what you do, it shines through with everyone you meet.
