Nan Belton and Rachel Page WIMWA Summit presentation ‘FIFO and Fido: a tale about volunteering’

FIFO and Fido: A story about volunteering

There are a few points of intersection between the lives of Nan Belton and Rachel Page: they both work for BHP Billiton  (although Nan is at Nickel West FIFO of Leinster and Rachel is Iron Ore exploration); they have both moved to WA to work – Rachel from Scotland and Nan from New Zealand;  they both share the belief that volunteering adds meaning and purpose to their lives; and finally, they both love dogs and chose to volunteer at the Dogs’ Refuge Home of WA in Shenton Park.

Every year WIMWA highlights and supports an organisation or individual who is working to make a difference in our community, previous groups have included The Smith Family; Paralympian, and body acceptance campaigner – Jessica Smith, AMRRIC: Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities, and Ready to Work: Empowering Women to Work. In 2015, WIMWA highlighted the work of three groups: Dogs’ Refuge Home of WA in Shenton Park ; Karrakin: Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre and Act, Belong, Commit.

Nan and Rachel gave a great,  and very humorous presentation, to the audience at our recent summit, about the many positive  and surprising benefits* of volunteering and fostering at the Dogs’ Refuge Home and they have kindly allowed us to share it with you. If you are keen to get involved in helping out at the refuge please contact them here
