Gender Diversity in the Workplace

Gender Diversity in the Workplace

An opportunity to hear from a fantastic champion of gender diversity

Gender diversity in the workplace rightly continues to be seen as one of a handful of critical issues which must be addressed to allow Australia to reach our full potential. Why is this issue such a hot one and why is it of such importance to both men and women alike?

Gender Diversity in the Workplace – Women In Leadership Breakfast with John Galvin, Executive General Manager, Georgiou Group Pty Ltd

John Galvin has more than 25 years’ experience in the construction and engineering industry both in Australia and New Zealand and has overall responsibility for the oversight of a number of Georgiou’s operational business units, it’s cadet program, reconciliation action plan and gender diversity strategies.

As a Construction Executive working in a male dominated industry, John has experienced the often negative impacts of a lack of gender diversity. Times are changing but how far have we really come and what do we collectively need to do to challenge and change the status quo? What have others done that has made a difference and what can be learnt from their experiences?

John will explore the issue utilising available research, anecdotal evidence and his own personal experiences to present a position as to why addressing the issue is good for society and makes good business sense.

The Georgiou Group prides itself in being at the Forefront of Gender Diversity in the industry, running a number of programmes to recruit, retrain and recognise female employees. Such programmes include:

  • A Women in Georgiou (WIG) committee established to improve gender diversity at Georgiou.  The committee is supported by Male Champions who support and promote gender diversity within Georgiou and the Industry.
  • A Mentoring Program, partnered with Jackson McDonald, established to provide less experienced female employees with access to senior female mentors.
Georgiou is committed to gender equity and continues to lead industry discussions and sponsor initiatives that encourage graduates and high school students into the industry. Georgiou recently reached an important milestone with 50% of Engineering cadets and first year graduates being women.

The Georgiou Group is a privately owned building construction, engineering and property development company, delivering major projects across Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. With more than 30 years’ business experience and 800+ people on board, Georgiou has developed congruent businesses which work hand-in-hand to provide a complete service for their clients.

We hope to welcome you at the next event in AmCham’s prestigious Women in Leadership series.
