Championing cultural change is good business – Andrew Bywater, General Manager Darlot Gold Mine, Gold Fields Australia

In this engaging and personal journey, Andrew Bywater outlines how he has come to understand the importance of a healthy , diverse and inclusive workplace culture in creating a profitable and thriving business.

Andrew Bywater holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Geology with Honours from UNSW and a Masters in Mineral Economics from Curtin University.   Currently, he is General Manager, Darlot Gold Mine, for Gold Fields Australia. He has over 20 years industry experience in Start-up operations, Resource Development, Exploration and Change Leadership. He has held senior positions with BHP, Barrick and now Gold Fields where he is part of the Australian Management Team.

In 2003 Andrew commenced at the Cowal Gold Mine, holding various positions including Resource Geologist, Chief Geologist, Mining Manager and Acting General Manager; he was part of a team that turned a marginal project into a billion-dollar operation. During the pas 10 years Andrew has raised over $40,000 for two charity organisations the House with no Steps and Canteen.

  1. Extremely inspirational. I have been lucky enough to experience the Darlot culture that is championed by a great leader. As a woman in mining, it makes me so proud to see the respected men in the industry speak true about what these amazing women bring to the mining game.

  2. I’ve had the privilege of knowing Andrew for almost 30 years. He’s always been an inspiration.
    Although circumstances have changed a lot from undergraduate student days, it’s funny how the values, the style and the attention to people have not changed at all.
