Being the same only different – Kyra Bonney with Shequita Bonney

In this insightful presentation Kyra Bonney, WA Indigenous Manager for Chandler Macleod, is joined by her niece Shequita.  Using Shequita’s personal journey they workshop ways that the mining and resource sector can support, champion and foster diversity and inclusion – particularly for indigenous employees, and in so doing continue to close the gap and achieve true reconciliation.

Shequita Bonney is a Gubrun woman from the Goldfields region with connections to Noongar Country. The eldest of five girls Shequita is driven to be a good role model for her sisters. Shequita moved from her home in Esperance to live with her Aunty Kyra in Perth while completing Year 12 and participating in a a business administration traineeship through BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Aboriginal School Based Traineeship Program.

Kyra Bonney is a Guburn (Kupurn) women from the Goldfields with connections to Noongar country.  The first in her family to graduate with a university degree, after many years of working on the ground in operational roles in the industry, Kyra is currently working for Chandler Macleod as Indigenous Manager WA she is responsible for recruiting and managing Indigenous projects for their clients and balances her working life with supporting her teenage daughter. Kyra has been recognised for her contribution to the resources industry, winning the 2014 CME ‘Outstanding Woman in Resources’ award and the 2015 ’40 under 40’.

With a lot of uncertainty, Shequita applied and was accepted into a pre-apprenticeship program for Electrotechnology. She knows that her pre-apprenticeship program will open many doors, for both indigenous and non-indigenous women, and she is full of excitement for her future.
